In this article, The hidden magic in the machine, by Bob Sutor of IBM, the author explains how Web Services can be both critical to the future of IT and suffer from a number of different definitions and misunderstandings. The author argues that Web Services are, by design, something that works in the background, transparently to users. He says Web Services is "...critical, but its very transparency makes it difficult to nail down and understand."
